Al-Ḥākim reported in his book al-Mustadrak and at-Tabarānī reported in his book al-Mʿujam al-Kabīr on the authority of ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar bin al-Aas (May Allāh be pleased with them) who said that the Messenger of Allāh (May Allāh elevate his rank & grant him peace) said,"Indeed, your ʾĪmān wears out in your heart similar to how a Thawb wears out. So supplicate Allāh to restore the ʾĪmān in your hearts." ʾĪmān wears out the same way as a Thawb wears in the sense that it is subjected to deterioration, weakness, decrease due to disobedience, sins, and conflicting diversions that keep one away from ʾĪmān, in addition to trials that reduce the strength and vigor of one's ʾĪmān. They disfigure its beauty, excellence, and splendor.
